Project - Analogue Photographers

Project Statement

‘Analogue Photographers’ is a coffee table book celebrating the art and community of film and analogue photography. The book begins with a personal introduction and a self-interview reflecting on my passion for analogue processes. It then highlights the influential work of three photographers who have shaped my perspective and style of photography: Ansel Adams’ composed landscapes, Dorothea Lange’s emotive photojournalism, and Garry Winogrand’s extensive street photography. The final section features interviews and work from friends with varying experience in film photography. Analogue Photographers was created to inspire both beginners and returning enthusiasts to explore—or rediscover—the beauty of shooting on film and to test my skills of editorial and publication design.

All of the layout design, hierarchy and typographic layout was done by myself with much of the copywriting coming from existing sources (books, essays, interviews and documentaries). Throughout the book I tried to create as much visual interest as I could with the layout, trying not to seem too blocky and repeated whilst sticking to my guidelines and grid system, to achieve this I utilised the imagery and whitespace to create a much more balanced look and easier read.

Custom laser cut acrylic front cover that I designed for the book, the design is inspired by Paterson film developing trays that are normally used in the darkroom.
Double page spread featuring an essay on one of Dorothea Lange’s most iconic images.
One of my favouritre subtle features; a footer marker I designed inspired by the DX barcodes seen on rolls of film usually in the bottom corner.
The second section of the book; my interviews of friends who shoot analogue, this section was done with a slightly less subtle feature, it was inverted to signify that we are still learning the process and are still ‘developing’ our work and style, the same way a film negative needs to be scanned and inverted before being fully finished.
